The essentials in 30 seconds
Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 believe themselves to be heroes because Doctor Hedo designed them around his ideal of justice: costumed appearance, poses, discipline and mission of protection. Magenta subverts this ideal by making them believe that Capsule Corporation, Goku and their allies belong to a malicious organization. The Gamma therefore do not feign virtue; they act on fake information. Seeing Carmine threaten Pan and Magenta free Cell Max, they understand that the Red Ribbon Army is the real danger. They then change sides. Gamma 2 sacrifices herself against Cell Max, while Gamma 1 survives and chooses a truly protective path.
The Gamma occupy a unique place among the artificial creations of Dragon Ball. They are neither cold machines obeying without thought, nor humans transformed against their will like C-17 and C-18. Hedo constructs them as superheroes and gives them an identity compatible with this role.
The trap comes from their definition of the enemy. Magenta knows that Hedo admires vigilantes and does not attract him by simply offering to take over the world. He creates a narrative in which the known heroes are dangerous invaders. The Gamma therefore enter the scene convinced that they are preventing a plot, while they are unknowingly protecting a criminal organization.
Their reversal does not destroy this moral programming: it reveals it. As soon as the facts contradict the propaganda, they take a stand against their sponsors. Their story is less about a transition from evil to good than about the moment when two sincerely heroic beings finally identify the right side.
Spoiler warning: this article reveals the manipulation of the Gamma, their break with the Red Ribbon Army and the sacrifice of Gamma 2 in Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO.
Hedo designs his androids in the image of the vigilantes he admires
Doctor Hedo is not a copy of his grandfather Gero. Both are scientists capable of creating artificial fighters, but their motivations and imaginations differ. Gero turned his revenge against Goku into a military program. Hedo is interested in strength, technology and especially superhero figures.
This passion shapes Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. Their colorful uniforms, their helmets, their capes, their presentation poses and their way of naming attacks compose a public identity. They are not only equipped to fight: they are prepared to see themselves as spectacular defenders.
In the manga adaptation, the prelude devoted to Goten and Trunks further develops this motif. The two teenagers act like Saiyaman X1 and X2, with costumes and poses inspired by a game hero. The story thus establishes a mirror game between several generations of costumed vigilantes, even before the heart of the events of SUPERHERO.
This aesthetic is not enough to prove goodness, but it reveals Hedo's intention. He wants his creations to embody the justice he admires. The Gamma therefore have a moral compass and a capacity for judgment. The problem is that their creator is given false information about the people they have to fight.
The article on Yamcha's heroic journey reminds us that a hero is defined by his choices, not by his origin or his appearance. This rule applies to the Gamma: their costume announces an ideal that their decisions must confirm.
The Dragon Ball figurine collection allows us to compare their vigilante silhouettes to military armor and training outfits. At the Gamma, every visual detail contributes to the personality desired by Hedo.
Magenta transforms Earth's defenders into false enemies
Magenta doesn't tell Hedo that the Red Ribbon Army wants to regain its power. He claims that Capsule Corporation is running a secret society, using aliens, and planning a threat to the planet. The real-life exploits of Goku and his friends are reinterpreted as evidence of a dangerous network.
This lie is effective because it mixes true elements with a false conclusion. Goku is indeed a Saiyan from space, Piccolo is indeed a Namek and Bulma has exceptional technological means. None of this proves criminal enterprise. Magenta chooses the facts that impress and hides the many times this group has saved the Earth.
Gamma 2 therefore attacks Piccolo without believing himself to be the aggressor. He thinks he is accomplishing a preventive mission. Piccolo sees his power, feigns defeat and follows him to the base. This infiltration reveals to Namek the return of the Red Ribbon, the existence of the two Gammas and the development of Cell Max.
Piccolo and Goku's relationship itself began in hostility before becoming a solid alliance. Piccolo's journey to Goku's camp shows that an old label of enemy is never enough to summarize present actions.
Magenta also uses Pan in a setup intended to get Gohan out of his house. The little girl is not a passive prisoner: she understands Piccolo's plan, plays fear in front of her father and already shows the reflexes of a fighter. Our portrait of Pan and his powers replaces these capabilities without attributing exploits from future versions.
The product Injured Super Saiyan 2 Gohan reminds us that Gohan is not the agent of an invented plot. He once defended Earth against Cell, although he has since devoted much of his time to his family and his research.
The Piccolo collection underlines the role of the true investigator of history. By surviving the attack and infiltrating the base, Piccolo obtains the information that will allow him to organize the response.
Gamma 1 is methodical, Gamma 2 more theatrical
The two androids share a close combat level, an initial loyalty to Hedo and the conviction to serve justice. However, they are not interchangeable. Gamma 1 appears serious, sober and focused. He analyzes his opponent with discipline and leaves less room for spectacle.
Gamma 2 is more expressive. He multiplies the poses, statements and visual effects that accompany his actions. This theatricality does not mean that he takes his mission lightly. It translates his way of embodying the superhero designed by Hedo.
Their first major duels reflect this difference. Gamma 2 confronts Piccolo and believes he has eliminated him when he hides his survival. Gamma 1 fights Gohan and stands up to his power. However, everyone remains capable of observing, dialoguing and reassessing the situation.
They also have artificial energy and sophisticated technology. However, they are not the same types of cyborgs as C-17 and C-18. The latter are humans modified by Gero; the Gamma are creations of Hedo. Our comparison of C-17 and C-18 explains the numbers, temperaments and backgrounds of this older duo.
The difference in personality becomes a strength rather than a weakness. Gamma 1 provides stability; Gamma 2 brings its audacity. When they recognize their mistake, they do not react in the same way, but converge towards the same conclusion: protecting the innocent is more important than obeying Magenta.
The Vegeta collection offers another example of a proud character whose actions evolve over time. Among the Gamma, this evolution takes place over a brief crisis, because their moral ideal existed from their creation.
Red Ribbon actions contradict the narrative they were taught
The Gamma do not change sides because an opponent reprograms them. They observe a growing gap between Magenta's words and the actual conduct of her organization. People described as evil protect a child, cooperate and try to limit the damage. The so-called defenders threaten this same child and cling to their power.
In the film, the general confrontation allows Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 to dialogue with their adversaries and understand the manipulation. In the manga, the shift is made particularly concrete when Gamma 2 sees Carmine pointing his gun at Pan. This action cannot be reconciled with a mission of justice.
Orange Piccolo also reveals that Magenta's targets are not the monsters described. Piccolo could have sought to destroy the Gamma, but he speaks to them and exposes the true plan. His new strength, detailed in the guide dedicated to Orange Piccolo, gives him the necessary advantage to impose this moment of truth.
The Gamma's choice becomes possible because Hedo gave them more than an order. Their conception includes an ideal, a personality and the ability to interpret a situation. A simple military machine would perhaps continue to apply the received target. They compare their mission to their values.
They do not immediately deny any connection with their creator. Hedo was also manipulated, even if his taste for power led him to accept a dangerous project. The Gamma therefore distinguish Magenta, the organization and the scientist who gave them their heroic consciousness.
The Son Goku collection recalls the absent at the center of propaganda. Magenta presents Goku as a conspiratorial alien, while the Saiyan even ignores this new operation and trains far from Earth.
Their alliance against Cell Max transforms the ideal into action
Cell Max's awakening removes all ambiguity. Magenta unleashes a weapon that Hedo deems uncontrollable in order to avoid her own defeat. The giant protects neither the soldiers nor the laboratory. He attacks indiscriminately, proving that the Red Ribbon leadership prefers destruction to abandoning its project.
Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 then join Gohan, Piccolo, C-18, Krillin, Goten and Trunks. They know of Hedo's creation and can report his weakness to the head. Their information becomes as important as their power: heroes no longer hit a gigantic body at random.
Gamma 2 chooses an attack where it focuses all its energy before diving at Cell Max. He knows that this action could cost him his life. The impact inflicts considerable damage without finishing the monster. His sacrifice remains heroic because it offers others a chance, not because he would have won the battle alone.
The creation and hasty activation of the opponent is detailed in our article on Cell Max. This context shows why the Gamma know both its dangerousness and its faults.
Gohan then finishes off Cell Max with the Makankosappo while Piccolo restrains the creature. His Beast form is explained in the article on Gohan Beast's silver hair. Victory thus brings together several forms of heroism: sacrifice, technical knowledge, endurance and decisive attack.
Gamma 1 survives. He does not seek to continue a fake war once Magenta is defeated. With Hedo, he found a place with Capsule Corporation. This outcome confirms that the alliance was not a tactical parenthesis: the survivor chose to permanently use his power as a protector.
The product Black Goku Rosé with his scythe represents the moral opposite: an appearance associated with Goku can hide a destructive project. With the Gamma, a birth within a criminal organization can on the contrary produce beings capable of choosing the good.
The Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu collection places Cell Max among the threats that force alone is not enough to understand. The Gamma gain their hero status by opposing their own initial side's weapon.
The film establishes their moral arc, the manga develops their heroic roots
In the movie Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, the plot moves quickly from the introduction of Hedo and Magenta to Gamma 2's attack on Piccolo. The two Gammas appear already completed, convinced of their mission and capable of confronting the defenders of the Earth.
The manga then adapts the heart of this story, but precedes it with an investigation centered on Goten and Trunks. Their identities as Saiyaman X1 and X2 expand on the superhero theme and pit them against earlier Hedo androids. This material is not a hidden scene from the film: it belongs to the manga version.
The manga also suggests that the Gamma's style takes up elements observed in these young vigilantes. This detail reinforces Hedo’s passion and the constructed character of their poses. The film can be understood without this additional origin, because it directly shows the scientist's taste for heroes.
In both continuities, the essential points do not change: Magenta lies, the Gamma first confront Piccolo and Gohan, the conduct of the Red Ribbon reveals the deception, then the two androids participate in the fight against Cell Max. Gamma 2 dies while sacrificing itself and Gamma 1 survives.
This story should not be mixed with Dragon Ball GT or Dragon Ball DAIMA. Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 belong to the framework of Dragon Ball Super. The other series do not add a second canonical origin to these two characters.
The future of C-17 offers a useful comparison: a former adversary created by Gero, he becomes a protector and wins a collective event. Our article on C-17's victory in the Tournament of Power shows a much longer arc, distinct from the rapid Gamma reversal.
The broly collection extends this theme without confusing the stories. The Broly of Dragon Ball Super is also presented as an adversary under influence before his relationships suggest a different life.
