The Super Saiyan God ritual brings together six right-hearted Saiyans: five transmit their light to the sixth, chosen to receive divine power. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks first attempt the five-person ceremony, but fail because they misunderstood the required number. Videl then reveals that she is expecting Gohan's child. The first Super Saiyan God in modern history does not appear through solitary training or sudden anger. It was born from family cooperation. This origin immediately distinguishes the red form from the first Super Saiyans, whose transformations are generally linked to intense emotion and a personal power threshold.
The ceremony seems simple once explained, but the characters first make a counting error. The formula calls for five Saiyans pouring their light into a sixth. Bringing together just five people, Goku included, is therefore not enough. The intervention of Videl and the child she is carrying solves the problem.
The movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, the corresponding arc of the anime Dragon Ball Super and the manga version retain the central principle, while varying the length and several staging details. They must be distinguished rather than adding each scene as if they formed a single montage.

Beerus' dream sparks search for divine warrior
After a long sleep, Beerus wakes up with the memory of an opponent named Super Saiyan God. The title is not familiar to him as a transformation already listed. Accompanied by Whis, he questions the Saiyans still alive and begins by meeting Goku on Kaio's planet.
Goku doesn't know what this warrior is, but asks to test Beerus all the same. Even in Super Saiyan 3, he is defeated with overwhelming ease. This defeat establishes that the forms already mastered are not enough and gives a concrete stake to the search for divine power.
Beerus then travels to Earth, where Bulma's birthday is taking place. Vegeta knows the reputation of the God of Destruction and tries to avoid any provocation. The party nevertheless degenerates, and Goku ends up asking the Dragon Balls for an explanation about the Super Saiyan God.
The reason for this quest is detailed in our article on the search for Beerus. The god does not initially come to teach a new form: he wants to check if the adversary seen in a dream really exists.
The Son Goku collection allows you to follow the passage between the golden-haired Super Saiyan 3 and the red divine form. The difference is not reduced to a color: the nature of the ki changes.
It takes six Saiyans: five donors and one recipient
Shenron knows the legend and describes the process. Five righteous Saiyans must unite their light and pass it on to another Saiyan. The recipient becomes the Super Saiyan God. The total needed is therefore six Saiyan participants, even if only five are presented as the transmitters.
The word “fair” does not mean that each participant has always been impeccable. Vegeta has committed many crimes and has long defined himself by his pride. At the time of the ritual, however, his choices, his family and his desire to protect the Earth allow him to be included in the group.
This moral requirement distinguishes the ceremony from a simple transfer of ki. Fighters have shared energy before in other situations, but this does not automatically produce a Super Saiyan God. You must reproduce the configuration indicated by Shenron.

The Vegeta collection recalls that the prince participates as a donor, without receiving the form during this scene. His own access to divine power will be associated with his training, and not with a second ritual shown on screen.
The first attempt counts Goku among the five instead of adding a sixth
The heroes bring together Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten and Trunks. They form a circle and share their energy. Goku feels an increase, but the result remains unstable and does not match the divine presence Beerus seeks.
The error is arithmetic rather than moral. The group understood that five Saiyans were needed in total, while five must power another participant. Goku can't be both one of the five donors and the sixth recipient without one person missing.
This scene prevents us from reducing the ritual to a simple quantity of energy. If four Saiyans pour enough ki into Goku, the total strength might increase, but the divine transformation does not complete. The collective structure indicated by Shenron must be respected.
Goten and Trunks are still children, but their age does not exclude them. They are Saiyan hybrids capable of transforming their energy. Gohan is also a mixed race. The ceremony therefore does not require six full-blooded Saiyans.
Goku's first golden transformation relied on a very different trigger, recounted in our article on the first Super Saiyan. On Namek, Krillin's anger and loss open an individual level; facing Beerus, Goku depends on a group.
The product Injured Super Saiyan 2 Gohan reminds us that Gohan knows how to produce his own immense power. In the ritual, however, he chooses to entrust her to his father with the others.
The Piccolo collection underlines a logical absence: Piccolo has a righteous heart, but he is Namek. The rule specifically calls for Saiyans and not six righteous warriors of any species.
Videl reveals her pregnancy and Pan completes the circle
The group seems to be short of an available Saiyan. Videl then intervenes and explains that she is carrying Gohan's child. The child has not yet been born, but his Saiyan heritage allows him to participate through his mother. This revelation introduces Pan into the story before his birth.
Videl is not a Saiyan herself. She serves as a physical connection to the baby and joins the circle for Pan's light to manifest. The Saiyan participant required by the ritual is the child she is carrying, not Videl transformed by the ceremony.
The phenomenon confirms that the ritual does not depend on the ability to consciously fight. Pan does not choose any technique and has not yet mastered his ki. Its existence and the required purity are enough to complete the six presences.
This participation does not mean that Pan becomes Super Saiyan God herself. She gives her energy to the receptacle like Vegeta, Gohan, Goten and Trunks. Only one fighter receives the final transformation: Goku.
The subsequent journey of Pan and his powers must be distinguished according to the end of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball GT. Her prenatal presence at the ritual belongs to the history of Battle of Gods taken over by Great.
The broly collection reminds us that not all known Saiyans are together. Broly has not yet joined the circle of allies in this story and is not needed for Goku's ritual.
The circle transmits the light of the five Saiyans towards Goku
Once the count has been corrected, the participants form a circle and hold hands. Goku receives their energy successively or collectively depending on the staging. A light envelops the group and the sky reacts to the birth of divine power.
The five donors are Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Pan through Videl. Goku takes the central position of the recipient. Keeping this list avoids two common mistakes: counting Videl as an independent Saiyan or forgetting that Goku is added to the five transmitters.
The transformation modifies Goku without visually increasing his mass. Her hair turns red, her eyes take on a corresponding shade, and her figure appears slimmer. A divine aura surrounds him. This calm appearance contrasts with the spectacular elongation of the Super Saiyan 3.
Goku first expresses frustration: he would have preferred to reach this level through his own efforts. He nevertheless accepts power because the Earth is threatened. This reaction maintains his identity as a practitioner while emphasizing that cooperation can open a path inaccessible individually at this moment.

The Dragon Ball figurine collection allows us to compare the red sobriety of the Super Saiyan God with the golden forms. The ceremony changes the quality of power before changing its visual excess.
Goku accesses divine ki and can finally sustain the fight
Before the ritual, Beerus neutralizes Super Saiyan 3 almost instantly. After the ceremony, Goku can trade blows, learn during the duel, and contain attacks whose repercussions threaten the Earth. He remains inferior to the God of Destruction, but overcomes an immense difference in scale.
Divine ki is not normally perceived like ordinary ki by those who cannot sense it. This particularity explains the reactions of spectators and opens a new area of training. Goku not only has more of the same energy: he touches a new category.
The ritual produces a temporary transformation in the initial fight. When the red appearance disappears, however, Goku does not immediately return to his old level. His body has assimilated part of the experience and continues to face Beerus, notably in Super Saiyan form depending on the version.
We should not conclude that Goku is then equal to Beerus. The god maintains the advantage and controls part of his power. Earth survives because Beerus recognizes his opponent's potential and ultimately chooses not to annihilate him, a subject detailed in our article on Beerus' decision.
The product Black Goku Rosé with his scythe shows another use of a saiyan body combined with divine ki. Black does not go through Goku's ritual: his origin and progression belong to the Zamasu arc.
The Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu collection replaces the former great adversaries. The ritual signals the entry of the series into a scale where gods, angels and universal threats structure the fights.
The ritual opens the way, but the training then allows you to return to it
The ceremony is the method used for Goku's first transformation. It is not presented as an obligation to repeat before each fight. After his confrontation against Beerus, Goku trains with Whis to understand and wield divine ki more independently.
Vegeta also accesses this domain without a complete ritual being shown for him. His training with Whis allows him to develop Super Saiyan Blue with Goku, and the manga then shows him using the red form in certain strategies as well.

The ceremony also does not guarantee an automatic victory. Goku gains the ability to compete long enough to interest Beerus, but admits defeat. The divine form creates an opportunity for combat; it cancels neither the experience nor the superiority of the god.
Piccolo's journey reminds us that training remains central after each revelation. As the Namek perfects received or awakened abilities, Saiyans must learn to stabilize their new powers.
Film, anime and manga tell the same ritual with different rhythms
The movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods introduces Beerus, Whis, and the ritual into a complete story. It features Bulma's party, the first attempt, Pan's prenatal participation, the transformation and then the long fight between Goku and Beerus.
The anime Dragon Ball Super picks up this event in its first major arc and extends it over more episodes. Situations, dialogues and combat details change. The number of participants and the role of Pan nevertheless remain at the heart of the success.
The manga Dragon Ball Super condenses this transition to the divine era much more quickly. It acknowledges the ritual and the confrontation against Beerus without reproducing the entire duration of the film or anime. Subsequent developments in the manga should not be retroactively projected into every shot of the film.

Broly's journey situates a further development of the universe of Great. When he meets Goku and Vegeta, they already have mastered divine transformations without a new ritual circle.
