The essentials in 30 seconds
The tournament between universes 6 and 7 was born from a bet between Champa and Beerus. Champa covets the Earth of Universe 7 for his cuisine and puts the Super Dragon Balls into play. Each god selects five fighters, subjected to a written test then to successive duels on the Nameless Planet. Leaving the ring, abandonment or incapacity results in elimination; killing is forbidden.
This tournament is more than a series of fights. It presents Universe 6, reveals the existence of different Saiyans, introduces Hit and places Goku and Vegeta in a competition supervised by the gods. Its organization mixes earthly tournament rules, sibling rivalry and cosmic bet.
Warning, spoilers: this analysis reveals the teams, Buu's disqualification, Frost's cheating, Hit's fights and the outcome of the tournament.
The manga and anime of Dragon Ball Super share the same general architecture, but certain exchanges, techniques and arbitration decisions are developed differently. We must therefore distinguish the common rule from its staging in each version.
Sibling Rivalry Turns Meal Into Cosmic Competition
Champa, god of destruction from Universe 6, visits Beerus with Vados. He compares the culinary specialties of the two universes and discovers the quality of earthly food. When he learns that the Earth of his own universe has become uninhabitable, he wants to obtain that of Universe 7.
Beerus refuses to simply hand over the planet. The two brothers then choose a tournament: each will bring together five fighters, and the winning universe will receive the set stake. This format allows them to continue their rivalry without directly fighting, a confrontation which could have disproportionate consequences.
Goku welcomes the project with enthusiasm because he wants to discover new opponents. Vegeta also agrees, attracted by the competition and the possibility of measuring the strength of a twin universe. Their motivation differs from that of the gods, but it makes the team possible.
The article on Beerus' search for the Super Saiyan God replaces his relationship with Goku. The guide on training Whis explains why the two Saiyans became the obvious representatives of Universe 7.
The Son Goku collection and the Vegeta collection illustrate the two pillars of the team.
The Earth and the Super Dragon Balls form a two-level issue
Champa has collected six Super Dragon Balls, planetary-sized spheres distributed between universes 6 and 7. Beerus indirectly possesses the last one. The winner will be able to use them to make a wish of a magnitude much greater than terrestrial Dragon Balls.
If Universe 6 wins, Champa wants to exchange the Earths in order to recover the inhabited planet and its cuisine. If Universe 7 wins, Beerus gains use of the Super Dragon Balls. The inhabitants of Earth do not negotiate this bet themselves, a sign of the arbitrary power of the gods of destruction.
The guide on Shenron, Porunga and Super Shenron details the scale of these spheres. They must be brought together and their invocation obeys a divine language, which requires the intervention of an angelic assistant.
After the victory, Beerus secretly formulates a wish favorable to Champa: he restores the Earth of Universe 6 and its inhabitants. The gesture shows brotherly affection that Beerus prefers to hide behind his brusque nature.
So the prize doesn’t just create a winner. He corrects the situation that had caused Champa's jealousy, while letting each universe keep its own Earth.
The wish also reveals the difference between the public result and the private intention. Beerus could simply use his victory for his own benefit; However, he chooses to repair his brother's lost world, without presenting this gesture as a mark of affection. The organization born from a quarrel thus ends with aid which implicitly recognizes the attachment between the rival gods.
A figurine of Black Goku Rosé with his scythe announces a subsequent conflict where the gods intervene without respecting the spirit of a tournament. She belongs in the next arc, not the Universe 6 team.
Five candidates per universe, but a test reduces Beerus' team
Beerus selects Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Majin Buu and Monaka. Goku and Vegeta represent the main power; Piccolo brings experience and technique; Buu has atypical abilities. Beerus presents Monaka as an exceptional fighter in order to motivate the Saiyans.
Before the duels, participants must pass an elementary written test. This condition checks that they sufficiently understand the rules. Buu fails and cannot fight. Universe 7 therefore begins with four effective participants.
The Champa team brings together Botamo, Frost, Magetta, Cabba and Hit. Each poses a distinct problem: body absorbing blows, appearance similar to Frieza, Metalman constitution, Saiyan techniques or temporal manipulation.
Cabba reveals that the Saiyans of Universe 6 have evolved differently and do not lead the same conquests. The article on the relationship between Cabba and Vegeta explains why a duel becomes a transmission.
Hit is the most formidable fighter on the team. The guide on Hit and his time jump presents the technique without confusing it with an absolute stopping of time.
The Piccolo collection illustrates the tactician of Universe 7, while the collection of great antagonists allows you to compare Frost to Frieza without assuming they have the same history.
Successive duels in a ring, with elimination but without killing
The tournament takes place on the Nameless Planet, set up with an arena and spaces for divine and mortal spectators. The fighters face each other one by one. The winner remains in the ring and meets the next participant from the opposing team.
A fighter loses if he goes out of bounds, gives up, or becomes unable to continue. Killing is prohibited. This rule protects the spirit of competition and forces overpowered warriors to dose their attacks.
Relay format rewards one team, but exposes each fighter
Unlike a table where each participant only competes in one duel, the winner remains in the ring. A single fighter can therefore eliminate several opponents, but he retains the fatigue and the information he has already revealed. The next team observes their techniques and can choose a more suitable profile.
This rule gives value to the order of the passages. Sending out a fighter who is too valuable early on can force him into several duels; waiting too long can let the team lose without taking advantage of him. Beerus and Champa don't control every outcome, however, as the personalities of the participants alter the plan.
Goku prefers to understand an opponent by confronting him, Vegeta often wants to impose a clear victory, Piccolo looks for a technical solution and Hit saves his abilities. The tournament thus becomes a confrontation between styles as well as between power levels.
The ring exit rule also allows you to win without inflicting more damage than necessary. Goku moves Botamo when his punches seem ineffective. Conversely, the small arena can punish a powerful fighter if he loses his balance or ignores the limits.
Hidden weapons and substances capable of distorting a duel are prohibited. Frost uses a concealed poison needle, which provokes a protest. His image of a benevolent hero collapses when the cheating is discovered.
The arbitration is not always perfectly calm, because Beerus and Champa protest and defend their interests. An official arbiter nevertheless announces the decisions, and the angels play an organizational role superior to the quarrels of the two gods.
The dome or atmospheric barrier allows participants to breathe in the chosen location. The setting is built to accommodate several species, but certain physical particularities, such as Magetta's heat, continue to influence the combat.
A Injured Super Saiyan 2 Gohan figurine recalls a fighter considered but unavailable for this team. The tournament takes place when its preparation does not yet correspond to the desired level.
The succession of adversaries requires you to preserve your energy
Goku first confronts Botamo and uses the rules of the ring to take him out rather than trying to break through his resistance. Frost then beats him using his hidden device, then puts Piccolo through the same trap before being unmasked.
Vegeta demands to be able to face Frost and quickly eliminates him. He then defeats Magetta by exploiting her sensitivity to insults, then confronts Cabba. Instead of simply crushing him, he provokes his anger in order to make him reach Super Saiyan.
Hit stops Vegeta's streak with his time jump. Goku returns to the competition after Frost's cheating review and gradually seeks to read Hit's technique. Their duel becomes the sporting summit of the event.
The article on Hit's temporal displacement distinguishes adaptation and simple speed. Goku anticipates where Hit will act instead of pretending that time no longer has an effect.
Goku finally gives up, in part because he refuses the restrictions that prevent Hit from using deadly techniques and wants a freer future fight. Monaka enters next, and Hit chooses to lose, partly understanding Beerus' set-up.
The official victory therefore goes to Universe 7, but it depends on tactical decisions, sanctions and abandonments as much as on raw power. This is precisely what a tournament with rules allows.
The broly collection offers a contrast with an immense fighter rarely placed in a refereed setting, and the general collection Dragon Ball brings together the complementary profiles of the tournament.
Manga and anime keep the general picture, but develop the duels differently
Both versions use the Beerus-Champa bet, the same main teams, the written test, Frost's cheating, and Universe 7's victory. The general order also leads to the duel between Goku and Hit.
The anime expands the fights and particularly features the combination of Super Saiyan Blue with the Kaioken against Hit. The manga treats Blue's handling and how Goku responds to the time jump differently. A technique shown in one version should not automatically be described as used identically in the other.
The article on Kaioken and its risks explains why animated combination requires extreme control and is not just free multiplication.
Monaka's role also illustrates the particular tone of the event. Beerus maintains the lie of his power to stimulate Goku and Vegeta. Hit understands that the final confrontation is not a true fair test and chooses to fall, a gesture which returns the manipulation to Beerus.
Hit's motivations and the details of the arbitrations also receive distinct nuances. The common outcome does not transform each dialogue into a shared quote. The guide on the manga and anime of Super explains this parallel construction.
This tournament prepares for the Tournament of Power, but its stakes and rules are different. Here, two universes participate in a bet; no one is threatened with erasure for a defeat. The tone remains that of a competition monitored by Beerus and Champa.

In summary
Beerus and Champa organize a five-on-five tournament to decide a bet over the Earth and the Super Dragon Balls. Participants take a written test then compete successively in a ring, without the right to kill. Buu fails the test, Frost cheats, Vegeta trains Cabba, and Goku faces Hit. Universe 7 wins, and Beerus uses his wish to restore his brother's Earth.
